College of Information Technology Hosts Workshop on “Human Rights and Information Technology” Duhaa Fadill Abbas The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Information Networks and the Legal Division at the College of Information Technology, organized a workshop entitled “Human Rights and Information Technology: Challenges and Opportunities in the Digital Age.” The session was delivered by Lecturer Assistant Hassan Hadi Al-Maamouri and Lecturer Assistant Ali Hussein Mahdi, and was attended by a wide audience of faculty members and students. The workshop explored the profound transformations brought about by the rapid digital revolution, highlighting how information technology has become an integral part of daily life. At the same time, it underscored the significant challenges this technological advancement poses to human rights, while also shedding light on the unprecedented opportunities it offers for the protection and promotion of those rights. Key topics of discussion included issues that lie at the heart of human rights in the digital age, such as privacy, equality, and transparency. While technology facilitates access to information and essential services, the workshop emphasized its dual-use nature, as it can also serve as a tool for surveillance and rights violations. Participants stressed the importance of sustained societal and institutional dialogue to ensure that technological progress is guided in ways that protect rights and uphold justice. The main objective of the workshop was to deepen understanding of the complex relationship between human rights and information technology, examining how digital tools influence fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression, the right to privacy, and the right to access information. The discussion was structured around three main pillars: the first focused on fundamental human rights in the digital era; the second addressed the emerging challenges to these rights; and the third proposed practical solutions to overcome obstacles and capitalize on the opportunities available. The workshop concluded with a strong call for the development of comprehensive national policies and legislation that safeguard digital human rights, combat misinformation and harmful content, and foster transparency and accountability. It also emphasized the importance of supporting innovation and enhancing international cooperation to create a safe, fair, and inclusive digital environment for all.
