The Department of Information Networks at the College of Information Technology, University of Babylon, held a Master’s thesis defense entitled “An Enhanced Network Intrusion Detection System Based on Hybrid Deep Learning Techniques” presented by the graduate student Ameer Ahmed Ghani, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Suad Abdulilah Abdulhussein. The defense took place at 9:00 AM on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in the conference hall of the college.

The thesis highlights that, with the rapid increase in connected devices and the growing cyber threats, securing network infrastructures has become a critical necessity—especially in environments utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Traditional security approaches often fall short in addressing the scale and complexity of modern attacks, such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

To address this issue, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) integrated with Deep Learning (DL) techniques are employed to predict such attacks. The proposed system introduces a Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) based on deep learning architectures, utilizing Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM), and a hybrid GRU-BiLSTM model.

The system s development included a preprocessing phase aimed at enhancing data quality and model performance. This preprocessing involved handling missing values, entropy-based data reduction, normalization, and feature selection using Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC).
