Iraq’s Ministry of Health Launches the “National Drug System Gudea” to Ensure Pharmaceutical Safety and Security in Local Markets

Duhaa Fadill Abbas
The Iraqi Ministry of Health has officially launched the “National Drug System Gudea” a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing regulatory oversight and ensuring the safety, quality, and authenticity of pharmaceutical products in Iraq. The project introduces a modern digital tracking mechanism based on QR code technology, which will be affixed to all medicine packages.

This comprehensive electronic system enables citizens to scan the QR code using a dedicated mobile application, instantly accessing detailed information about the product, including:

- Drug name
- Manufacturer name
- Official retail price
- Expiration date
- Searchable drug information

In addition to providing transparent access to drug data, the application allows users to report violations directly through the platform. This feature is expected to significantly reduce the circulation of counterfeit, expired, or unlicensed medications, especially those distributed without regulatory oversight by unauthorized parties.

The application is currently available on all major operating systems, ensuring broad accessibility across all segments of the population.

The Ministry anticipates expanding the scope of the system to include all pharmaceutical products, including imported drugs, with the overarching goal of standardizing drug pricing and ensuring equitable access to high-quality medications through official channels.

This project marks a major advancement in pharmaceutical governance in Iraq, reinforcing the principles of transparency, public health equity, and regulatory accountability.
