The Department of Information Networks at the College of Information Technology, University of Babylon, held the defense of the doctoral dissertation titled " Improving methods and algorithms to protect against spam and email attacks using machine learning and neural networks " by PhD candidate Ahmed Aboud Ali Mohsen, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Al-Hareth Abdul Kareem Abdullah. The defense took place on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the College Conference Hall, as part of the requirements for equivalency with the Aspirantura degree in the Russian Federation.

The dissertation addressed the growing challenges of cybersecurity threats associated with email systems, which pose significant risks to both individuals and institutions. The research focused on developing hybrid models that integrate the strengths of deep neural networks—specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM)—with traditional machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest, and XGBoost.

Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed hybrid model (CNN–XGBoost) achieved superior performance in accurately detecting spam messages and countering malicious attacks, even in scenarios involving deliberate evasion techniques.

The findings underscore the practical significance of the study, as the proposed models can be integrated into email systems to enhance their reliability and safeguard users against phishing attempts and malware threats. This achievement highlights the University of Babylon’s commitment to advancing applied research in the field of cybersecurity and its contribution to addressing global digital security challenges.
