As part of the academic activities of the College of Information Technology – University of Babylon, and in line with its commitment to fostering scientific research and strengthening academic collaboration among Iraqi universities, Asst. Prof. Dr. Naufal Turki Abis, faculty member in the Department of Information Networks, participated as a committee member in the defense of a master’s thesis by Abeer Saleh Alyan, a graduate student from the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Thi-Qar.

The thesis, entitled:
“EEG Features Extraction for Accurate Schizophrenia Classification”,
focused on developing an intelligent system based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to support the early diagnosis of schizophrenia. The research emphasized reducing computational complexity by analyzing EEG channels separately and explored four strategies for feature extraction and classification. Among the most notable were the use of the Butterworth filter, Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) for structural feature extraction, Lyapunov exponents, and spectral properties to represent dynamic and nonlinear aspects of the signals. For classification, the Random Forest algorithm was applied, demonstrating superior accuracy in distinguishing schizophrenia cases compared to traditional methods.

This participation highlights the pioneering role of the College of Information Technology at the University of Babylon in advancing interdisciplinary research, particularly in applying artificial intelligence techniques to medical and psychiatric domains, thereby reinforcing the college’s presence and impact in scientific and academic cooperation across Iraqi universities.
