Assistant Professor Dr. Sura Zaki Naji, Head of the Software Department at the College of Information Technology – University of Babylon, chaired the examination committee for the Master’s thesis defense of graduate student Zainab Falah Jaber from the Department of Computer Science, College of Education – University of Kufa. The thesis was entitled: “Plants Leaves Recognition Using Deep Learning Techniques and Metaheuristic Methods.”

The research emphasized the significance of accurate plant classification as a cornerstone in biodiversity, environmental studies, agriculture, medicine, and nutrition. It highlighted the suitability of plant leaves as a primary source for classification due to their availability and ease of collection.

The study proposed the integration of deep learning techniques to extract distinctive leaf features with metaheuristic methods to enhance the performance and accuracy of classification models. Three international datasets were employed in the experiments—Malaya Key, Plant Village, and Swedish datasets—where the proposed model achieved remarkable accuracy rates of 92.3%, 99.4%, and 94.3%, respectively, when using the SVM classifier. These findings underscore the potential of combining deep learning with metaheuristic optimization to develop more reliable and efficient systems for plant recognition.

By chairing this examination committee, Dr. Sura Zaki Naji reaffirmed the active role of the College of Information Technology – University of Babylon in fostering academic collaboration with Iraqi universities, promoting high-quality research, and encouraging the application of cutting-edge technologies to address challenges in agriculture, medicine, and environmental sustainability.
