Cybersecurity Department Organizes an Advanced Practical Workshop on Malware Analysis Duhaa Fadill Abbas In line with the objectives of the Cybersecurity Department at the College of Information Technology to enhance students’ practical competencies and develop their analytical skills in advanced cybersecurity domains, the department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a scientific and practical workshop entitled “Introduction and Hands-On Malware Analysis.” The workshop was delivered by Rand Khalid Mohammed, a third-year student in the Cybersecurity Department, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Hassan Abdul Ameer, and was attended by a number of faculty members and students of the college. This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to supporting student-led scientific activities and encouraging academic excellence grounded in applied learning. The workshop covered a series of integrated scientific topics designed according to a gradual and structured approach that took into account students’ academic levels. It began with a comprehensive conceptual introduction to malware, including its definitions, classifications, operational mechanisms, and impacts on digital systems, alongside an explanation of the fundamental concepts related to secure analysis environments and safe isolation techniques. The workshop then transitioned to the practical dimension by presenting essential tools used in malware analysis and applying them through hands-on exercises. These included Static Analysis and Dynamic Analysis techniques, with detailed explanations on how to monitor malware behavior, analyze malicious code, and understand propagation and targeting mechanisms. The content of the workshop progressed incrementally from introductory applications to more advanced analytical concepts, contributing to the establishment of a solid knowledge base for students and enhancing their ability to integrate theoretical understanding with real-world practical applications in the field of cybersecurity. The Dean of the College commended the advanced scientific level of the workshop, as well as the distinguished performance of the student presenter, praising her accuracy, depth of knowledge, and ability to deliver rich scientific content in a clear and systematic manner. He emphasized the importance of such activities in preparing and qualifying students to meet labor market requirements and confront contemporary challenges in information security. This workshop is part of a series of scientific activities organized by the Cybersecurity Department, aimed at supporting student talents, strengthening applied learning, and keeping pace with rapid developments in the protection of digital systems and critical infrastructure.
