Department of Software Engineering at the College of Information Technology Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Distinguishing Reputable and Predatory Journals Duhaa Fadill Abbas As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of scientific research and to promote the principles of academic integrity, the Department of Software Engineering at the College of Information Technology organized a scientific workshop entitled“Scientific Journals Between Quality and Fraud: Verification Tools and Ethical Selection Guidelines.” The workshop, delivered by Dr. Mohammed Jawad Al-Janabi, addressed the growing challenges associated with the spread of predatory and fraudulent scientific journals and their negative impact on researchers’ academic careers, particularly with regard to research acceptance, the accreditation of postgraduate theses and dissertations, and requirements for academic promotion. The workshop covered key topics including the definition of reputable scientific journals and the criteria for distinguishing them from predatory journals, as well as an overview of the most common unethical practices employed in deceptive academic publishing. It also included practical training on the use of internationally recognized verification tools and provided applied guidelines to assist researchers in selecting appropriate journals prior to submitting their manuscripts for publication, thereby ensuring the integrity of scientific work and the quality of research outputs. This workshop forms part of a series of research skills development workshops organized by the Department of Software Engineering for postgraduate students, delivered by a distinguished group of professors from various universities. These activities aim to enhance students’ research capabilities and to raise their awareness of rigorous scientific publishing standards in line with international best practices. The workshop witnessed active participation from postgraduate students and researchers, who emphasized the importance of such scientific events in safeguarding scholarly output, improving the quality of academic publishing, and strengthening the scientific research process based on sound professional and ethical foundations.
